The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, announced their 2024 nominations on Tuesday to honour exceptional work in the film industry. Every year, the announcement is met with utter chaos on social media as fans either celebrate or complain about their favourites receiving a nod or getting snubbed. As 2023 was an exceptional year for film, expect nothing less when you log onto your socials this week. Keep scrolling to learn what you need to know about this year’s Oscar nominees.

The 2024 Oscar Nominations

The Nods

To no one’s surprise, Christopher Nolan’s biographical drama Oppenheimer leads the pack with a total of 13 nominations, with nods in the major categories including Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.) and Best Director for Nolan. The film also received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score.

A fantasy movie by Yorgos Lanthimos, Poor Things which starred Emma Stone, was honoured with 11 nominations, including Best Actress and Best Director for the pair. Poor Things also nabbed Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), and Best Adapted Screenplay. The movie is followed by Killers of the Flower Moon in terms of total nominations, receiving 10 for Best Picture, Best Actress (Lily Gladstone), Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro), and Best Director for the legendary Martin Scorsese.

Next up is pop culture moment Barbie with 8 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), and Best Adapted Screenplay. The movie also received two nominations for Best Original Song with Gosling’s I’m Just Ken and Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For gaining the honours. A massive congratulations to everyone involved in making these fantastic works of art!

The Snubs

Everything good has its drawbacks and none more so than the Oscar nominations this year. The most glaring snub that has the Internet in an uproar is the exclusion of both director and lead actress Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie in Barbie. Considering the movie owes most of its success to these two women, it can’t be denied that their snubs are confusing, to say the least. Even the film’s Oscar nominees, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera put out statements directly questioning this decision. Awkward.

Apart from the pair who deserved so much better, English singer Dua Lipa was also snubbed for Best Original Song with her chart-topping disco hit Dance The Night. The song was the lead single for the Barbie movie and is arguably the most popular track from the iconic soundtrack, so what gives?

Other major snubs include a non-existent Best Actor nomination for Leonardo DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon. Greta Lee, the lead actress in Best Picture contender Past Lives, was also snubbed in the Best Actress category. Awards season favourite, May December, received a grand total of zero Oscar nominations for the main cast, including Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton.

In the face of these announcements, all we can say is that Billie Eilish sang it best in her Oscar-nominated song What Was I Made For, “I don’t know how to feel.” Check out the full list of 2024 Oscar nominees down below.
