New Zealand actor and director Taika Waititi has teamed up with Tourism New Zealand to produce a new promotional film titled “No Place Like It On Earth.”
This whimsical short film, directed by Jackie van Beek, highlights some of the breathtaking sights and experiences across Aotearoa New Zealand.
From whitewater rafting in Rotorua and idyllic flights over Mount Tarawera to dolphin viewing in Kaikōura and wine sampling in Auckland, viewers can fully immerse themselves in this wondrous journey throughout New Zealand.
While Taika was on set filming Season 2 of the HBO Max series “Our Flag Means Death” (with Aotearoa New Zealand as the official shooting location), he and Tourism New Zealand enlisted real-life stunt double Jade Daniels to help in the monumental mission of introducing New Zealand to the world.
Creator of Our Flag Means Death, David Jenkins, says, “I think when you come here (New Zealand), and you’re from the U.S, you imagine The Lord of the Rings and giant things… And then you actually see it and you’re like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s real. It’s here. I’m standing here and it looks like a visual effect.’”
Furthermore, scenes from “Our Flag Means Death” Season 2 were also filmed in renowned locations in New Zealand, including Bethells Beach, Piha Beach, and the Bay of Islands. The country has previously served as the magnificently stunning backdrop for numerous films, including “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.
“Taika Waititi is one of New Zealand’s most well known international talents, and with a bit of Kiwi ingenuity we came up with a creative solution to work within his busy schedule. The result sees Taika and Jade discovering some of the most incredible experiences that Taika’s home country, Aotearoa New Zealand, has to offer,” says René de Monchy, Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive.
Our Flag Means Death Season 2 is scheduled to air on HBO Max and partners on October 5, 2023, and will feature familiar New Zealand places.
