Taking a trip down to Kuala Selangor and thinking about activities to do and places to see? Well, don’t fret as we’ve come up with a list of things to do in Kuala Selangor! It’s a small, coastal town just 70km from Kuala Lumpur, and it’s right where the Selangor River meets the sea. The place is great for history buffs and nature enthusiasts, but don’t worry if you’re not either – there’s something for everyone.

Activities & Attractions in Kuala Selangor

1. Take Amazing Pictures at Sasaran Beach Sky Mirror

Possibly the most famous place in Kuala Selangor, people flock from all over just to see this magical place for themselves. An incredibly fun place to take mind-boggling pictures at, the Sasaran Beach Sky Mirror is a must-visit securet island. However, the “mirror” only appears for a hours for a few days every month, as it’s actually a flat sand seabed that appears above water during low tide. There are a few tour agencies that you can book with to get a boat tour of the Sky Mirror, so keep an eye out for those!

2. Witness the Magical Blue Tears

Doesn’t it feel like Kuala Selangor is just a magical place? This town is one of the few places in Malaysia where you can see the magical blue tears, which are actually a phenomenon of luminescent plankton that naturally glow blue. Also known as fireflies in the water, you can only catch this thing of beauty during the first few days of every month. They’re especially impressive during warmer months, and you need to catch a speedboat from the Sky Mirror Jetty from 9pm onwards.

3. Fly with Fireflies

Okay, maybe you can’t actually fly with the fireflies, but you can catch a boat ride and float alongside them! Kuala Selangor is home to one of the largest firefly colonies in the world, and you can book a guided tour to watch these glowing bugs float in the night. One of the best Kuala Selangor night activities, there are actually three places where you can see these lightning bugs; Bukit Belimbing, Kampung Kuantan, and Pasir Penambang. Be sure to bring plenty of mosquito repellant!

4. Explore Kuala Selangor Nature Park

Like we said, this place is a haven for nature enthusiasts, and Kuala Selangor Nature Park is definitely a must-visit place. This park spans across a whopping 296 hectares, and is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. It’s also divided into two main areas; the major Tropical Rain Forest and the minor Swamp Forest. There’s plenty of things to do at this nature park, like hiking through one of four trails, bird-watching, look for iguanas or snails, participate in the nature hunt group activity, or join the environment education package.

5. Catch the Sunset at the Altingsburg Lighthouse

While you can’t actually enter the formerly lighthouse, the surrounding area is still really nice and a great place to visit with your family. The lighthouse itself was built during the Dutch occupation, and was heavily used during the British occupation. You’ll get a gorgeous panoramic view of the Malacca Straits, as the lighthouse is guide for ships that are headed towards the Straits. Plus, the Altingsburg Lighthouse is a wonderful place to the enjoy the sunset, making it one of the romantic places in Kuala Selangor.

6. Feed the Eagles

One of the most unique experiences you can get in this coastal town, why not try your hand at feeding the eagles? Just don’t feed your hand to the eagles, that is. One of the hidden gems of Kuala Selangor, take a guided tour starting with a boat ride from Pasir Penambang jetty to the Selangor River estuary, and feed about 20 to 40 eagles who eagerly await food! There are a few guided tours that offer this experience, so be sure to do your research ahead of time.

7. Visit the Sri Shakti Dhevasthanam Temple 

Sri Shakti Dhevasthanam Temple is definitely a sight to behold. One of the wonders of Kuala Selangor, this historic temple is encapsulated by meticulously sculpted sandstone walls, a magnificent 5-tiered gopuram, and houses 51 stunning statues of the goddess Shakti. In fact, Sri Shakti Dhevasthanam Temple is the only temple in the world to have all 51 manifestations of the goddess Shakti. It took 10 million bricks, 100 tonnes of granite, 20,000 tonnes of steel bars, 25 tonnes of teakwood, 1,500 cubic metres of concrete, and 1.2 million hours of work to complete this intricate temple, and it’s definitely worth a visit.

8. Walk through Time at the Kuala Selangor Historical Museum

History buffs, this one is for you. Just a stone’s throw away from Altingsburg Lighthouse at Bukit Melawati, the Kuala Selangor Historical Museum is filled with relics and artefacts from bygone times. The museum also has wide display of ancient weapons, old currencies, dioramas, and educational exhibits that’s perfect for the whole family. Not to mention, admission is free! The museum itself is situated atop the hill, which offers great views of the town.
