Scrambling to find something festive to watch on Christmas Day? Sadly, there aren’t many new TV shows or movies featuring Saint Nick this year. That’s your cue to bring out the beloved classics like Home Alone and its New York sequel, Elf, A Christmas Story, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. To shake things up, though, there are a couple of musical Christmas specials debuting this month, along with a range of movies and shows across genres. Take a look at our list of what to watch in December 2024.

Best New Movies
1. A Nonsense Christmas
Dominating the pop charts in 2024 clearly wasn’t enough for Sabrina Carpenter — she had to take over Christmas too. Her holiday special, A Nonsense Christmas, was a playful celebration of double entendres with a festive twist, as she performed tracks from her new Christmas EP Fruitcake. The star-studded cast included the likes of Cara Delevingne, Quinta Brunson, Chappell Roan, and Tyla. With amazing duets, hilarious comedy sketches, and Christmas songs so catchy you’ll be humming them all season long, A Nonsense Christmas is a must-watch.

2. Maria
Director Pablo Larrain returns with another biopic about a fascinating historical woman, this time focusing on opera singer Maria Callas. Played by Angelina Jolie, Maria was one of the most famous opera singers of the 20th century, though her tumultuous private life often overshadowed her career — something all too familiar for women in the public eye. Lorrain’s Maria tells the story of the American-born Greek soprano, to an audience who may not recall her for her incredible voice, but will undoubtedly remember her after the credits roll.

3. A Carpool Karaoke Christmas
Here’s another Christmas musical to sing along to this month, this time featuring not one, not two, but three pop divas taking center stage. James Corden’s popular Carpool Karaoke: The Series returns with a festive episode starring Dua Lipa, Chappell Roan, and Lady Gaga. Apple Music’s Zane Lowe will take these three incredible superstars on a road trip around the world — unfortunately, one at a time — singing Christmas classics, answering questions, and getting into all sorts of hijinks in Japan, Missouri, and Los Angeles.

4. Black Doves
What says Christmas more than espionage, state secrets, and shootouts? All jokes aside, if you’re not into sappy holiday films, Black Doves is sure to pique your interest. Keira Knightley stars as an undercover spy (AKA a “black dove”) married to the Secretary of State for Defence, secretly selling state secrets to the highest bidder. But when her lover is murdered by London’s criminal underworld, her cover is at risk, prompting her organisation to send an old friend, played by Ben Whishaw, to protect her. Cue the shootouts!

5. No Good Deed
What do you say to keeping it light this Christmas with a comedy series starring the hilarious Lisa Kudrow? Granted, No Good Deed leans more toward dark comedy than pure laughs, but what’s better than morbid humour? The series follows three couples all vying to buy the same 1920s Spanish-style villa, convinced the house holds the key to solving all their problems. Why would a house be the answer to anything, you ask? Tune in to No Good Deed to find out.

6. Squid Game Season 2
Forget keeping things light this festive season — Squid Game is back with a second season, and it’s set to be just as big, if not bigger, than the first! Everyone remembers where they were when this global phenomenon first took off during the peak of the Covid years, thanks to its games with stakes that couldn’t be higher. Now, Gi-hun is back, diving into the games three years after his hard-earned victory — minus the blood-red hair. We don’t know about you but we can’t wait to find out why he would return as a player instead of taking down the organisation another way.
Available for streaming on Netflix on December 26.
