Lo and behold, here’s our what to watch in August 2024 list! Unfortunately, this month isn’t as packed with new TV series and original movies as before, largely due to the current state of television. It’s frustrating that shows are often canceled after just one season if they don’t instantly achieve massive success (we’re looking at you, The Acolyte!), despite the fact that many iconic series needed time to build their audience. Bitterness notwithstanding, there are still some hidden gems worth checking out, and here are our recommendations.

1. Trap
Everyone’s favourite trippy director, M. Night Shyamalan, strikes once again with his latest twist-filled movie, Trap. Starring Josh Hartnett as a serial killer known as “the Butcher,” the plot centers on a sting operation at a concert he’s attending with his daughter. To no one’s surprise, it’s revealed that he is the target of the FBI operation — will he evade them? Trap also marks the acting debut of Shyamalan’s eldest daughter, Saleka, who plays the pop star performing at the unlucky concert. We love nepotism!

2. Alien: Romulus
The Alien franchise returns with Alien: Romulus, a continuation of the epic science fiction slash horror thriller saga. Set between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), the film follows a group of struggling young space colonists searching for better living conditions, only to encounter deadly creatures while scavenging an abandoned space station. Fair warning: in case you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, it is known to be rife with body horror. If that’s not your thing, proceed with caution!

3. The Crow
Superhero fans, here’s a what to watch in August 2024 recommendation with no ties to the MCU or the DCU! The Crow is a reboot of its eponymous 1989 comic book series by James O’Barr and marks the fifth installment in the franchise. Starring Bill Skarsgård as Eric, he plays a murdered musician resurrected to avenge the deaths of himself and his fiancée, portrayed by musician FKA Twigs. Skarsgård clearly has a thing for dramatic clown-like makeup, but does his performance in The Crow rival his popular portrayal of Pennywise?

4. Bad Monkey
Our list finds its comedic streak in the brand new original miniseries Bad Monkey, starring Vince Vaughn. This crime comedy-drama revolves around Andrew Yancy, a former Miami Police officer turned health inspector, who finds himself investigating a case involving a human arm. With a premise like that, it’s no surprise that hijinks and kooky characters are quick to follow. But where does the monkey fit into all of this? Tune in to find out.

5. Pachinko Season 2
Are there any Lee Min-ho fans here? Catch Pachinko, a multilingual (Korean, Japanese, and English) drama series adapted from Min Jin Lee’s 2017 novel of the same name. The show spans four generations of a Korean family, beginning in 1915 and extending to 1989. In 1931, Sunja departed from her family in Japanese-occupied Korea to start a new life in Osaka’s Koreatown. The series explores the hardships and discrimination faced by Korean immigrants in Japan, so be prepared for some heavy feels.

6. Industry Season 3
If you’re having Succession withdrawals, give Industry a try. Another witty drama filled with well-dressed people, Industry follows a large ensemble cast of young finance graduates competing for permanent positions at a bank in London after the 2008 financial crisis. If your first thought is “Wow, what a boring plot”, keep in mind that prestige television is described as exactly that for a reason. We’re a sucker for complex narratives here at Glitz!
