Every year, the Chinese would gather to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. The festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese calendar. During this festival, you would come across many stalls selling sticky rice dumplings, also known as bak chang. While some of you may be making your own sticky rice dumplings, many places also sell them. Here are some of the best places to get sticky rice dumplings for the Dragon Boat Festival.

What’s The Story Behind Dragon Boat Festival?

The most believed story in modern China of the Dragon Boat Festival is about Qu Yuan, a beloved poet and minister of ancient China. Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Milou River.

However, when the local people who adored him found out, they raced with boats in order to retrieve his body. It is said that this was how the dragon boat races originated. When they couldn’t find his body, the local people dropped balls of sticky rice to prevent fish from eating the body. The Dragon Boat Festival is a day to commemorate this.

Today, you can find various combinations of sticky rice dumplings. You can find customised sticky rice dumplings with oysters, chestnuts, egg yolk, dried shrimp and so much more. There are even vegan-friendly and halal options too!
