After 53 long years, model, actress, martial artist, and pageant queen Sandra Lim has brought Malaysia back into the spotlight at Miss Universe 2024. She achieved a historic Top 30 placement in the 73rd Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico City. Her success marks the end of a decades-long drought, with Malaysia last reaching this stage back in 1970 when Josephine Lena Wong placed in the Top 15. Sandra’s remarkable journey began when she was crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2024 in September, a victory she used to make Malaysia proud on the global stage.

On Sandra Lim’s Journey to Miss Universe 2024

Sandra Lim’s rise to the Miss Universe Top 30 is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The 24-year-old shared on Instagram that after a spinal fracture, she was told she’d never wear heels or play sports again. Defying the odds, she rewrote her story with determination, walking the Miss Universe swimsuit stage in a royal blue halter neck one piece with confidence — a moment that marked both a personal triumph and her unshakable passion for chasing dreams. Her journey is a powerful reminder that perseverance can overcome even the toughest challenges.

Sandra’s standout performance didn’t stop there. Donning the breathtaking “Walinong Sari” national costume, she celebrated Malaysia’s cultural heritage while bringing it to the global stage. As she competed against a record-breaking 130 countries — the largest participation in Miss Universe history — Sandra’s achievement of making the Top 30 is even more of a remarkable feat. Although the crown ultimately went to Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer, Sandra’s place in the Top 30 marks a new chapter for Malaysia in the world of pageantry. After all, Malaysia boleh!
