Since its inception in the 1970s, Oversea Restaurant has been a household brand when it comes to preserving the rich traditions of Chinese food and is known for its superb offering of classic Cantonese specialities. Oversea Restaurant is bringing the “Ong” in with the Oversea Special Platter Dish Combo, the Prosperity Treasure Pot (Poon Choy), their best-selling crowd favourite Waxed Meat Rice in Claypot, six different types of unique Yee Sang in assorted flavours, and four Chinese New Year Sets in the spirit of ushering in the year of the Tiger with a roar. Glitz got the opportunity to try the menu firsthand and here’s what we have to say!

Oversea Special Platter (Dine-in only)

Celebrate Chinese New Year with your loved ones with a steaming pot of goodness blessed by a bountiful harvest. Starting at RM625++, the Oversea Special Platter features an assortment of premium seafood, meat and vegetables in the Prosperity Treasure Pot, Yee Sang with Salmon and Pear as an appetizer and Sweetened Sea Coconut with Longan to end the meal on a sweet note. Diners are also given an option to choose between the “Yong Zhao” Fried Rice or Noodle with Bean Sprouts and Shredded Meat to go with this meal. The Oversea Special Platter is available for dine-in only at Oversea Restaurants until Chap Goh Mei.

The reveal of the beautiful Poon Choy

Our say: There’s honestly no better way to spend Chinese New Year than indulging in one of the most classic dishes. Poon Choy, while easy to put together, isn’t easy to execute; as they feature different items that require different cooking times. Oversea Restaurant has definitely excelled in delivering a mouthwatering pot of Poon Choy. As its name suggests, this pot is truly filled with endless treasures. To give you an insight into what you can find, here are the list of ingredients: abalone, sea cucumber, dried scallop, crystal prawn, dried fish maw, superior fish maw, mushroom, BBQ pork belly, dried oyster, stuffed dried beancurd skin, goose web, roasted duck, arrowhead, fatt choy, Chinese cabbage, yam, and broccoli.

Our favourite has got to be the abalone, mushroom, superior fish maw, dried oyster, and yam. Every ingredient was cooked to perfection and was soft to bite. In addition, the portion that you get for the price you pay is incredible. Definitely worth it!

Prosperity Treasure Pot (Take-away)

The Prosperity Treasure Pot is a melting pot of abundance comprising 15 types of auspicious ingredients. Furthermore, it’s suited for 6 pax at RM538 nett and 10 pax at RM688 nett for those who prefer dining in the comfort of their own homes. To keep the temperature consistent, the Prosperity Treasure Pot comes with a complimentary clay pot and insulated travel bag.

Waxed Meat Rice (Dine-in & Take-away)

Waxed Meat Rice has always been a crowd favourite over the years. Thus, this traditional Chinese New Year dish prepared in a clay pot is making a comeback this year. So, be ready to enjoy the distinct aroma of this fragrant sweet and savoury goodness from the preserved meat, which is true comfort food for the soul. You can get this dish for RM108 (6pax) and RM138 (10pax).

Left: Clay pot rice, Right: Meat and vegetables

Our say: If there was anything that reminded us of our childhood days, it was this Waxed Meat Rice. It’s such a classic dish that was executed brilliantly that we wished we had more space in our stomach to spare. At first, the rice and other ingredients were brought in separately. Then, the preparation method was displayed for us as the waiter added each ingredient and mixed them together.

The mixing process of the Waxed Meat Rice

The end result was a beautiful medley of fragrant rice and Chinese sausages. In terms of texture, you can definitely feel the char from the clay pot. But the combination of flavours was what satisfied us. The familiar umami taste from the soy sauce mixed with the sharp burst of aroma from the spring onions was delightful.

Yee Sang ( Dine-in & Take-away)

The act of tossing Yee Sang while exchanging auspicious sayings is a must at every Chinese New Year event. Yee Sang typically features shredded and pickled vegetables, salmon, jelly fish, nuts, powders, sauces, and condiments. Overseas Restaurant is pleased to serve six distinct types of Yee Sang. You can find them in half and full portions ranging from RM78++ to RM180++ at the Overseas Restaurant. The types of Yee Sang available are:

  • The Oversea Fabulous Fruity Yee Sang
  • Prosperous Yee Sang with Abalone & Pear
  • Jelly Fish & Pear Yee Sang
  • Yee Sang with Sliced Salmon & Pear
  • Abalone & Truffle Yee Sang
  • Yee Sang with Sliced Salmon Fish

Our say: We had the Yee Sang with Sliced Salmon & Pear and was definitely surprised. This is actually our first time having Yee Sang with pear. Thus, we didn’t know what to expect. But from now on, we can’t see ourselves eating it any other way. Typically, Yee Sang features mandarin oranges and having pears was a fresh sight. It was also super refreshing as we crunch down on the pieces of pear through the other Yee Sang delights. Furthermore, if you’re looking for traditional Yee Sang preparation, Oversea Restaurant is the place to be. As the waitress prepares your Yee Sang, she exchanges auspicious sayings. It’s truly a lovely experience for those who value tradition.
