In the 1970s, Levi’s introduced the Fresh Produce collection, which was inspired by, well, produce. And, since we all enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, Levi’s decided to bring it back, but with a modern (pun intended) twist. For Spring/Summer 2022, Levi’s Fresh is a gorgeous collection of colourful favourites made with dyes taken from natural sources such as plants and botanicals. We’re here to tell you all about it so keep on reading!
Sustainable Dye In Levi’s Fresh
Natural-based dyes often generate more earth-tone colours, but with Levi’s® Fresh, they use novel dying techniques to create brilliant, frosty colours of peach, lavender, pink, and yellow. And it’s all done in a combination of yarn and garment-dyed pieces.
Non-endangered or non-threatened flora, such as madder root extract and natural indigo, agricultural wastes, such as food waste, and minerals, such as clays, carbonates, and natural oxides, are among the dyes used in the Fresh collection. These dyes were carefully structured to use fewer auxiliaries while maintaining colour fastness and aesthetics, resulting in a unique and environmentally friendly dye process. All of the dyes in the collection have at least 50% plant or mineral content.
Another characteristic of Levi’s Fresh that contributes to its sustainability is the employment of numerous water-saving colouring methods. Reverse osmosis was utilised in fabric mills to reclaim water used in wet processes. Garment dyeing was done in laundries with recycled water and energy-saving technology. Ultrasonic fibre dyeing and direct pigment dyes were two more water-saving techniques.
Head-To-Toe Collection
The collection includes a 551Z Straight Crop jean and a Type II Trucker in all four hues, which may be worn in monochromatic head-to-toe outfits or mixed and matched. A kangaroo pocket anorak, a Levi’s XX Chino pleated twill short, a Utility High Loose short, a cotton patch pocket chore coat, a calf-length denim overall dress, and a line of Red Tab Vintage Tees are also included.
Hats, in the form of a cotton twill bucket hat and a knit beanie, are offered to complete the head-to-toe ensemble. To add a little additional quirky fun, and to pay homage to the 1970s Fresh Produce collection, the entire line features distinctive tabs featuring various fruits and vegetables, a spin-off of the carrot tabs seen on the original.
“We are excited to debut our Levi’s Fresh collection, a vibrant mix of super soft tees, fleece, and denim made with natural dyes and water-saving techniques. Taking inspiration from our archives, we infused each piece with youthful energy borrowed from the original ‘70s Levi’s® Fresh Produce line. It’s a fun, plant and mineral-based, planet-friendly collection rooted in essentials and infinitely covetable. ” says Karyn Hillman, Chief Product Officer at Levi’s Strauss & Co.
The Levi’s Fresh collection is now available at Levi’s Online, all Levi’s stores, and department stores nationwide.
