What Is KLFW?

Ever since its inception in 2013, KLFW has become a channel for Malaysian designers and the local fashion community. The anticipated fashion week has allowed the fashion community to express themselves through chic and sophisticated outfits. At the same time, KLFW allows homegrown designers to showcase their collections where fashionistas are able to appreciate and honour them.
‘Wear local, dress global’ is the belief that KLFW holds close, which is why they have propelled many young Malaysian designers into the international fashion arena. KLFW has become the hallmark of fashion in Malaysia, be it for ready-to-wear, avant-garde, couture or even athleisure.
You probably remembered KLFW 2020, where the event took place virtually with 60 designers. Throughout the 2020 shows, key messages of revival and sustainability were relayed.
“We have certainly gone through some tumultuous times. However, with all other crises, this too shall pass. Although the road to recovery will not be an easy one, together we will always come out stronger. I am heartened to see that the designers who are with us for KLFW 2021 showed resilience, re-imagined their businesses, and made internal processes more effective at creating a leaner, more efficient workplace,” said Andrew Tan, Founder of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week.
This year, KLFW is ready to be back and set to be bigger than ever with new fashion trends and a show you will never forget.

Sponsors of KL Fashion Week 2021
This year’s KLFW sees the presence of three main sponsors that are the giants in their own respective fields. The first sponsor is the Japanese luxury automobile brand, Lexus. The second sponsor is tech giant, Samsung, and finally, one of the largest banking groups in Malaysia, Ambank. Each of these sponsors is set to bring their knowledge and wisdom into the fashion world.
Other than the opulent ready-to-wear collections on the runway, KLFW is also reviving the Thread of Heritage, A Truly Malaysian Textiles Exhibition throughout the physical show dates. Cheminahsayang will be showcasing this year’s exhibition and is supported by KLFW’s official bank partner, AmBank Malaysia.
What makes this collection one to catch is the fact that it features a hand-blocked batik design that was meticulously and intricately curated by Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Binti Almarhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj. The collection is also produced by Yus of Kakee Batik, where every piece exudes culture and heritage.
Aside from that, KLFW is also extending its initiative to promote appreciation for the local fabric industry. With this, Taylor’s University, Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) and Barbie Mattel will be collaborating on The Patung Project. This project will showcase Malaysia’s rich culture and heritage. It is also an effort to preserve the hallmark of the diverse arts and crafts across different ethnicities in Malaysia. The exhibition will take place at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from 1st to 7th November.
Kuala Lumpur Fashion Awards 2021
This year, KLFW is announcing the first-ever Kuala Lumpur Fashion Awards 2021! This prestigious fashion award will celebrate both the industry and its designers. It will also be Malaysia’s first fashion-focused award, presented by Lexus Malaysia.
“It is my privilege to present for the very first time the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Awards. These awards will not only underscore the importance of human connection in design excellence but also serve as a platform to highlight undiscovered talents by recognising the resilience and innovation displayed by these fashion designers in the previous year,” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of Lexus Malaysia.
