Although it has been nearly 30 years since Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy were first cast as the Sanderson sisters in Hocus Pocus, they have frequently expressed their desire to reprise their roles throughout the years.
“I didn’t (think the movie would be made) until the day finally came. And then I realized, ‘Oh, we’re really going to do this.’ This was kind of a dream come true,” said Bette Midler during the virtual press conference.
“After I realized it was actually a phenomenon, I started asking people around my age,…’ don’t you think they would be interested in a sequel?'”. This was a long time ago. This was like 15 years ago, something like that. So here we are … I do love a franchise, I think I’m a little elderly for a franchise at this point. But I’ll take what I can get,” she added.
The film, which opened in theatres in July 1993, was initially a box office failure before being resurrected as a cult classic for Halloween movies.
“I think you just make films and you go on to the next one, and however the audience receives it is always a surprise,” Kathy Najimy stated.
“So I think there was something in this film, I think, like Wizard of Oz-ish, where the generation shows it to their kids, and shows it to their kids, and shows it to their kids. So it becomes part of the fabric of the history of the family, ” she said, reflecting on the film’s significance.
Directed by Anne Fletcher, Hocus Pocus 2 is a haunting sequel to the Halloween classic that brings back the delightfully wicked Sanderson sisters for more comedic mayhem. The Hocus Pocus 2 stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Sam Richardson, Doug Jones, Hannah Waddingham, Whitney Peak, Belisa Escobedo, Lilia Buckingham, Froyan Gutierrez, and Tony Hale.
A Disney+ Original movie, Hocus Pocus 2 will premiere on 30th September 2022, exclusively on Disney+.
