Known for its rich heritage and history, Melaka is one of Malaysia’s most visited states, offering a variety of things to do and, obviously, places to eat. Antique shops nestled in historical buildings and vibrant markets make Melaka a popular destination for locals and tourists to experience history. Aside from that, it boasts a great culinary scene, ready to be explored by foodies. We have tried a bunch of restaurants while visiting Melaka, so let’s check out the best restaurants in Melaka for flavours you will never forget.

The Best Restaurants in Melaka

1. Jonker 88

We visited Jonker 88, undoubtedly a well-known restaurant famous for its thirst-quenching Cendol, which boasts a perfectly balanced taste of sweet palm sugar and rich coconut milk. We just can’t get enough of its taste! For those seeking something different, you can add a dollop of durian for just an extra RM2. We also tried their Baba Laksa, bursting with flavour and a rich broth. Located on Jonker Walk, the restaurant’s vintage collectibles decorate the environment, adding to its charming character.

2. Geographér Café

We can’t say we have been to Melaka without visiting Geographer Café! It offers a great selection of food, ranging from laksa to thin-crust pizzas. The restaurant is housed in a two-storey building with a striking yellow exterior adorned with retro decorations. Other dishes we had were Nyonya Curry Rice and Fried Vermicelli — both very satisfying choices, we can admit. We also enjoyed the live bands performing here, but it’s usually crowded, so it’s better to reserve your spot.

3. Nancy’s Kitchen

Specialising in authentic Peranakan home-cooked meals, Nancy’s Kitchen is a non-Halal restaurant that offers delightful family dinners in Melaka. We ordered Nyonya Laksa, Ayam Pongteh, and Pai Tee, all prepared with a moderate spice level. Nancy’s Kitchen also boasts an extensive selection of appetisers, fried rice, vegan options, and desserts to complement our dining experience. Conveniently located along a major road with ample parking available, we found it easy to locate and didn’t have to spend much time looking for a spot.

4. The Baboon House

Imagine a Chinatown scene set amidst lush greenery with charming Peranakan interiors — that’s The Baboon House. We discovered this restaurant offers a varied menu but specialises in burgers. One standout for us was the Lamb Aloha Burger, featuring a juicy patty with a perfect blend of subtle heat from the sauce and sweetness from pineapple. We also enjoyed pairing the burger with their craft beers, which added a flavourful twist to our dinner. A little side note: we had to ring the doorbell to be let in by the staff.

5. King Kunyit

King Kunyit is a local favourite, where we relish dining on a variety of ‘goreng kunyit’ dishes, including chicken, beef, and tilapia fish. Each portion is suitable for one person, and if you enjoy spicy food, their sambal provides just the right amount of kick. We also found out that patrons can request non-spicy dishes from the waiter. Due to limited seating, the restaurant can get crowded during peak hours. Our advice is to arrive early or dine after the lunch rush to avoid waiting in line.

Thanks to its convenient opening hours until two in the morning, we often head to Asam Pedas Claypot Restoran Kota Laksamana to satisfy our random late-night Asam Pedas cravings. It’s our go-to spot for dinner in Melaka, especially after exploring the city late at night. Located just 10 minutes from Jonker Street, this bustling restaurant occupies a quieter area with ample seating available along a significant stretch of the road. For the Asam Pedas dish, customers can choose from the head, body, or tail of the fish in a sour yet spicy broth, accompanied by plenty of okra.

7. Hard Rock Cafe

We love visiting Hard Rock Cafe, a well-known destination for travellers keen on exploring local restaurants and cafes. Situated by the riverside, it’s the ideal spot for dining, relaxing, and unwinding after a day of sightseeing, trishaw rides, street shopping, or river cruising through the city. With live rock bands performing during dinner, we love the vibrant atmosphere after a long day. Bonus point: if you decide to drive, there is underground parking available for restaurant customers — talk about convenient!

8. Tengkera Duck Noodle

We can’t miss out on Tengkera Duck Noodle! Renowned as one of the top Chinese restaurants in Melaka, it has been serving delicious duck noodles for over two decades. This humble noodle shop has become our go-to restaurant in Melaka. Tucked away along Jalan Kota Laksamana, it offers many dishes, but the star of the show is definitely their duck noodles. The yellow noodles, we found, are free from any alkaline taste, and the duck is incredibly flavourful down to the bone. As it’s a popular spot for breakfast and brunch, dishes tend to sell out quickly if you arrive late in the morning or early in the afternoon.
